Erlene Shatto

Funeral service for Erlene Shatto will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, October 18, at Claremore Assembly of God with Pastor Dave Mewbourne officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of MMS-Payne Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Monday 1-8 p.m., and family will greet friends 5-7 p.m.

Erlene passed away Thursday, October 13, 2016, at Hillcrest Hospital, Tulsa, at the age of 93.

The daughter of Henry Washington Setters and Bernice Irene Mason was born September 29, 1923, in Little Rock, Arkansas. The family soon moved north of Claremore where Erlene grew up and attended school. After school, Erlene began working for the Briggs family. Mrs. Briggs taught her many things about life, and remained very dear to Erlene throughout her life. While visiting with friends in downtown Claremore, Erlene met Virgil Wesley Shatto. Upon that first meeting, Erlene told her friend that she would marry Virgil. After a brief courtship they were married on May 25, 1942, in Claremore. They made their home in Claremore before moving to California for a couple of years. They returned to Claremore and in 1964, they moved to Tulsa. Erlene worked at Clark's Laundromat for Evelyn and L.C. Clark in Claremore, Humpty Dumpty Pharmacy in Tulsa, and began working for Brown Duncan Department Store in 1964. She continued working for Brown Duncan, which became Dillard's, for 23 years. She retired from Dillard's in 1986 where she was the Department Manager for Ladies and Childrens Wear. Erlene enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, an avid camper, and loved being with her family.

Erlene was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dennis Setters; sisters: Hildred Freudenthauler, Karen McMillan, and Wanda Carnell; and granddaughter, Saterra Sue Shatto.

Survivors include her husband of 74 years, Virgil Shatto; children: Virginia E. Walker of Tulsa, Linda Sue Holland of Claremore, Virgil Richard "Rick" Shatto and wife, Sally of Jenks, and Vivian M. Rogers and husband, John of Claremore; grandchildren: Lesa Minasian of Claremore, Jeff Shatto and wife, Tina of Chelsea, and Cathy McAuliff and husband, Mike of Owasso; 6 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
