The son of Bernie and Ida Bowen Akin was born March 23, 1926, in Fortuna, Missouri. There he was raised and attended Fortuna High School, graduating with the class of 1943. Shortly after graduating, Fritz was drafted into the United States Army. After completing basic and combat training, Fritz was sent to the European Theater. There he served during the Battle of the Bulge as a mortar gunner. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge at the age of 18. When the war ended, he reenlisted into the Army and was stationed at Scott Field, an Army Air Base. In 1947, Scott Field became Scott Air Force Base and Fritz became part of the United States Air Force. On a trip back home he met Fay Dunn, and shortly thereafter they got married and moved to Belleville, Illinois, where Fritz was stationed. Over the next several years, Fritz served in places such as Kansas City, Missouri, Korea, and several other locations. In 1960, he was transferred to the United States Air Force Headquarters at the Pentagon. He retired from there in 1967 as a Chief Master Sergeant. Fritz and Fay moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he worked for General Services Administration until his retirement. At that time, they moved to Versailles, Missouri, and he became active in the Masonic Lodge, where he was a 32nd Degree Mason, and a 50 year member of the North Shore Shriners Club, and was also an active member of the Versailles Presbyterian Church. In 2004, Fritz and Fay moved to Claremore to be near their daughter Terry Carter.

In his spare time, he enjoyed working on anything electronic, and was a Ham Radio Operator.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and wife Fay.

Survivors include his daughter, Terry Carter and husband Wayne of Claremore; granddaughter, Tiffany Mann and husband Daniel of Parsons, Kansas; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Isaac Mann; brother, Norman Akin of Versailles, Missouri, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
