Caroline Jane Shaffer

A memorial service for Caroline J. Shaffer will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at First United Methodist Church in Claremore, with Dr. Ray Crawford officiating. Caroline will be interred at Bluff Cemetery, Springdale, Arkansas. The family will greet friends in the Fellowship Hall at the church immediately following the service.

Caroline, 86, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2022. The daughter of Leo Frederick and Alice (Thompson) Schneider, Caroline was born Jan. 9, 1936 in Aurora, Illinois. Her family relocated to Springdale, Arkansas in 1952 where she met Paul Shaffer. Caroline Jane Schneider and Dr. Paul David Shaffer were married Aug. 21, 1956 in Springdale.

Caroline began her career in education at First United Methodist Church, Springdale. She was instrumental in starting the preschool at FUMC, and ultimately served as Director of Christian Education and Program Director.

After a move to Tennessee, Caroline returned to college at age 49, attending Austin Peay State University in Clarksville. Completing both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Psychology, she was hired by the University as Director of the Educational Opportunity Center. While there Caroline guided non-traditional students,military personnel, and their families from nearby Fort Campbell through their own educational journeys.

After Dr. Shaffer and Caroline relocated to Claremore in 2000 to be closer to family, she taught part-time at Rogers State University before retiring.

Caroline was very connected in the Claremore community. A member of First United Methodist Church, Tuesday Study Club, Aladdin Club, Phi Kappa Phi, P.E.O., and former member of the CASA Board of Directors. Caroline was always on the go. She loved to travel, and especially enjoyed entertaining friends and family in her home, including numerous bridge groups she often hosted.

Caroline is survived by her two sons: David Shaffer and wife Angela, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; Scott Shaffer and husband Bob, Claremore, Oklahoma; and grandchildren: Lauren Shaffer-Seidenberger, Mallory, Marshall, Stuart, Spencer, and Simon Perryman, their spouses, and three great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Dr. Paul Shaffer, and daughter Lisa Shaffer Perryman.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Hospice Foundation or the American Red Cross.
