He enlisted with the US Army in 1956 and proudly served his country. Donny Dennis, a lifelong friend, introduced Charles to Shirley Ann Chambers, the rest is history, they were married on March 30, 1956 and made Claremore their home through the years.

When Charles was honorably discharged from the Army, he began working as a valve assembler for Dover Norris, after 24 years of faithful service, Charles opened his own sign company, Green Country Signs, with later became City Signs. He also was Shirley's biggest helper on her business ventures, Shirley's Sun Shine Shop, the antique malls and later Woody's Auction. Charles enjoyed fishing and hunting, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and especially those grand and great grandchildren. Always on the look-out for the next bargain, Charles enjoyed checking out garage sales and estate sales.
