Cheryl Newman

October 18, 1947 — March 26, 2022

The funeral will be held Tuesday, 5 April 2022, at FUMC Claremore, 10:00 a.m. followed by a family co at Rose Hill.
Cheryl W. Newman, of First Christian Presbyterian Church in Pryor, OK, passed away in her Claremore home on Saturday, March 26, 2022, after a short battle with aggressive cancer. Cheryl passed peacefully in her sleep, at home, with family by her side. Her daughters were privileged to assist and spend time with her through her illness and brief hospice.
Born October 18, 1947 in Tulsa to Mary W. & Floyd Lee Walker, Cheryl was raised and married in Tulsa. Cheryl graduated in 1965 from Memorial High, and attended Oklahoma State in Stillwater for her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education.
Cheryl married her high school sweetheart, Mark B. Newman, of Tulsa in 1967 at First Baptist Church in Tulsa. They remained lovingly married over 50 years until his death in 2017. She had 4 children and cared for many others through fostering, babysitting, and teaching. The family lived in California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Pennsylvania. They made their home in Claremore in 1995.
Cheryl was witty, smart, beautiful, athletic, and competitive. She was adventuresome and courageous. She was financially savvy, frugal, and fair-minded. She was playful and laughed easily. She enjoyed playing piano and guitar, social dancing, trivia, bridge and other games, and many outdoor activities. Sports she did include: softball, bowling, field hockey, swimming, skiing (water & alpine), archery, canoeing, and more. She loved nature and animals and sharing knowledge.
Cheryl was private but friendly. She made friends for life through her activities as well as neighbors and church. She worked well with others, preferring to be behind the scenes but she was capable and wise in leadership roles. She retired after many years at Tulsa Community College, where she worked administration in several departments, assisted students, and taught classes. She was always active in her church and Sunday school, actively studied the Bible, volunteered, organized, and served on committees. She proudly served on the ministerial search committee in Pryor. At home, she read, worked puzzles in the paper, and watched and supported college sports (especially OSU). She tried to keep up with old friends gathered across miles and decades.
We rejoice and are comforted that her spirit reunites with God and that she’s rejoined the loved ones that predeceased her. We are privileged to have had this time with her to prepare and ease her final months.
She is preceded in death by: parents Mary W. (Loney) Walker & Floyd L Walker; husband Mark B. Newman; children Matthew B. Newman & Cari S. Fryman; granddaughter Mariah Newman; sister-in-law Linda N. Weathers.
She is survived by: siblings Marylea Byrd & James M. Walker; daughters Lorelei Flaherty & Megan Newman, daughter-in-law Rachel Bradley, son-in-law Robert Fryman; grandchildren Kelsey Flaherty, Talon Flaherty, Jeff Pittman, Mark Pittman, Faith Morrissey, Ana Morrissey, & Maximus Newman; great-grandchildren Emi Antonio, Samantha Petroff, Elias Petroff, Charlotte Pittman, & Drew Pittman (due May); siblings-in-law Richard (Jr.) & Janet Newman; nephews Eric Weathers, Richard Newman III, Daniel Newman, David Walker; nieces Teresa (Weathers) Camera & Kat (Byrd) Poole; and more family & loved ones than can be named.
