James Weldon Lindsay

Memorial service for James Weldon Lindsay will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at Claremore First Baptist Church.  Friends may visit at the funeral home on Monday, October 1, 2018 from 1pm-8pm, with family receiving visitors from 6pm-8pm.

James Weldon Lindsay, devoted husband, father, son, Papa, boss, and chief, was called home on September 27, 2018, surrounded by the love and support of his wife and girls. Diagnosed with ALS, fighting until the very end without complaint or waiver in his faith in the Lord and his family. James’ zeal for his business and work ethic was infectious and an example to all around him. Anyone who captured his vision will succeed in life and be respected among all. He was not only loved and respected by his family but admired and honored by his friends and employees. He led by example, a giant among men, always rising to the help of anyone in need, making sure that he gave anyone the opportunity to better themselves through hard work and discipline.

Family who cleared the path to heaven before James were his mother and father, Jack and Mildred, his brother Charlie, and his precious grandson Conner Stevens. James is survived by his wife Sandra of Claremore, OK, daughters, Mauri and Kerry Johnson, Marci and Padgett Stevens, Missy and Mike Howe, 7 grandchildren Ryan & Daniela, Christopher & Amanda, Lindsay & Brandon, Kaitlyn, Cameron, Bryce and Josie plus 3 great grandchildren, Aleigha, Kayden and Florence, all of Which have been touched in various ways by the example Papa lived out.

James was born on September 16, 1940 to Jack Maurice Lindsay and Mildred Snyder Lindsay. He was the middle child of two brothers, Richard Rex “Peck” and Charles Barton. He was born in Durant, Oklahoma and attended schools in Minco, Longmont and Sherman. He met Sandra in Laverne, Oklahoma and the two were married on December 21, 1961. They started their lives in the panhandle of Oklahoma, their first child Mauri, born in Woodward. They then moved to Lubbock, Texas, where Marci was born. He worked for Haliburton at that time when an opportunity to work at Baker Taylor located in Spearman, Texas with his own welding rig arose. There Missy was added to our family making it a family of five. In 1972 James had a vision to start his own company. He moved his family to Tiawah, where his business prospered, allowing them to relocate to Claremore, which they all currently still call home.

James was devoted to the Lord and a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Claremore until his health declined. James had several people he loved. However, the marriage he shared with his wife, Sandra, far exceeded any love seen today. His girls learned at an early age that they were not to be disrespectful to her and that the love they had would be the envy of all their friends as they grew up. Family was his life. His daughters, Mauri, Marci, and Missy grew up knowing the love of a strong man, who worked hard for all his family to have what he did not have growing up.

James never complained about going to work, it was a part of who he was, an enjoyment you might say, one he shared with one of his daughters, allowing her to carry on his work ethic. James enjoyed hunting quail and pheasant with his grandsons and friends, setting up his fifth wheel at Canton, fishing (especially for little Lindzy fish), cooking out or having a good fish fry, relaxing at the ranch in McAlester. Whether riding 4 wheelers with his grandsons or teaching one of the boys to untangle their fishing line, and shaking his head if a pole of his was lost. Snow skiing also become a hobby, with his family and friends trying to keep up with him as he swept down the slopes. For a time he held season tickets for the Dallas Cowboys and when mom couldn't go with him, the privilege to be his traveling buddy was up for grabs, one of which loved the game and players with the same zeal he did.

We will miss his memory for details and dates, always winning an argument or good discussion, and his uncanny ability to “always be right”. Life will never be the same without James (dad or pops), however, his legacy will be carried out for generations to come.
