Myrna Bengston

Funeral service for Myrna McSpadden Bengston will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the First Christian Church of Chelsea. Burial will follow at Chelsea Cemetery under the direction of the Chelsea Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Wed. 1-8 p.m., and family will greet friends 6-8 p.m.

Myrna passed away Monday, May 18, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family at the age of 71.

The daughter of Harold "Cap" Sr. and Louise Draeger McSpadden was born May 22, 1943 in Chelsea. As a young girl she she attended Chelsea Public Schools. There she was active in band, playing the clarinet and serving as majorette. She was a member of the graduating class of 1961. Wanting to become an educator, Myrna began attending NEO in Miami. She would later earn her Masters in Education from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.

May 22, 1964, Myrna married her high school sweetheart, Toby Bengston. After just a short time of marriage, Myrna and Toby moved to Witchita, KS. There she began working as a first grade teacher at Amelia Earhart Elementary. After a couple of years there, a job opened up, back home in Chelsea, and Myrna and Toby returned home. She began teaching seventh and eight grade math, but in 1977 she was named Principal of McIntosh Elementary. She held that position until retiring in 1995. However, retirement didn't last long and she returned to Chelsea school, teaching the alternative learning classes. When she finally did retire from teaching she had in 40 years of mentoring young lives.

In her spare time Myrna loved traveling. Places such as Destin, Cozumel and Marco Island were a few of her favorite stops. She also became a real estate agent, sold AMWAY, and loved working on crafts. She will be remembered as a loving woman who spent her life molding and mentoring children as an educator.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Louise McSpadden.

Survivors include her husband Toby of the home; brothers, Larry McSpadden and wife Cherry of Frisco, TX, Pat McSpadden and wife Ann of Chelsea, and Eugene McSpadden and wife Joy of Broken Arrow; sisters-in-law, Stephanie Wilson of Chelsea, and Deborah Addis of Grove; nieces and nephews, Michelle and Devon Kelly, Derek and Terese McSpadden, Rich and Eva McSpadden, Dave and Chrystal McSpadden, Thomas McSpadden, Luke McSpadden, Caitlyn and Dustin Deville, Shannon Poe, David and Jen Poe, Susan and Gavin Fluke, Tiffany Malochay-Delk, and husband Jessie, Meghan Malochay, and Justin Malachay as well as many other great-nieces, nephews and friends.
