Betty Christine Short

July 5, 1935 — July 16, 2020

Betty Christine (Eades) Short was born July 5, 1935 in Turley, OK to parents George and Velma Eades. As a child she loved riding bikes, being in nature, and walking with her younger sister, Ilene to church. She attended Cherokee Elementary and Middle School where she completed the 9th grade in 1952.
She married the love of her life, Clarence Short, on May 30, 1952 in Turley, OK and the two were faithfully and happily married for 68 years. The couple welcomed their first daughter, Betty Joan, in 1953 and their baby daughter, Debra Sue in 1955. The family moved to Skiatook, OK in 1962 where they spent 30 years building a lifetime of memories with their daughters and four grandchildren before moving to Inola, OK in 1993.
Betty was very involved in her daughters’ lives serving as a volunteer Girl Scouts Leader, taking piano lessons with them, lying on a blanket and looking at the stars at night while telling stories, and spending numerous weekends camping together at the Illinois River.
While her girls where in high school, Betty not only went back to school to complete her GED, but also took night classes and graduated from Beauty College in April 1971. She was very proud of this accomplishment and was a gifted beautician operating a successful business, “Betty’s Beauty Shop,” out of her home for 11 years. In her retirement years she worked as a Preschool Teacher at Inola Child Care Center.
As wonderful as she was as a mother, she excelled even more as a grandma, and was literally everything to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Even though she worked some outside of the home, Betty took great pride in being a homemaker…always providing for the needs of her family while keeping a warm and inviting, yet spotless home.
Betty had a gift and passion for cooking and baking, especially for holidays and large family events. She was highly creative and utilized her innovative talents to sew, oil paint, or make crafts, which she would give away as gifts to family and friends or use to decorate her house.
Betty was adventurous and loved traveling, sightseeing, shopping, and finding a fun place to swim. She loved being out in God’s creation and was fond of accumulating redbird collectibles, planting flowers, and painting nature scenes; She valued hard work, a nice appearance, keeping her handsome husband well groomed, and clean kids…even if it meant a bath under a freezing water faucet at the campground.
She had a genuine desire for knowledge and learning and courageously navigated changing times and expanding technology, often under the banner of “being self-taught.” She was a self-professed “hugger,” loved to laugh and smile, play card games, and eat buttered popcorn. She offered the best advice through meaningful conversations, was generous in giving of her time and energies, and made the most out of every situation while truly enjoying life.
She did not spare an ounce of effort when it came to decorating and celebrating Christmas, her favorite holiday, but she also loved birthday parties, too. She was the happiest when she was with her family and when she was the center of their attention.
Betty was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and exemplified the truths of a Proverbs 31 woman. She was saved and baptized at Golden Hills Baptist Church in 1958. She was an active member at First Baptist Church in Inola, OK. She loved to sing hymns with the Senior Adult Choir, study God’s Word with her Sunday School class and husband, serve and encourage others with her gifts and talents, help with funeral meals, and through the years, teach in Vacation Bible School. She was a woman of great faith!
Betty Short stepped from this life into heaven on July 16, 2020. She was an amazing and faithful Christian wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She had the most caring spirit, brightest smile, and a deep love for Jesus and others, especially her husband and family. Betty was loved by all and will be greatly missed until we meet again.
