Bobby D. Girten

Funeral service for Bobby D. Girten will be held Thursday, May 24, 2012 at the Chelsea First Baptist Church. Pastor Eddy Bob Mathews will officiate. Burial will follow at the Chelsea Cemetery under the direction of the Chelsea Funeral Home and Crematory.

Bobby passed away Sunday, May 20, 2012 in Rochester, Minnesota at the age of 66.

The son of Loyal and Wilma Wilson Girten was born at home in Winganon on September 25, 1945. He attended Winganon elementary and later Chelsea Public Schools. He was a member of the Chelsea High School graduating class of 1964. December 9, 1963 he married Kathy Edmondson. They made their home in Chelsea where Bob worked as a welder. In 1970 Bob became a cadet at the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Academy. He retired in 1997 as a second lieutenant after 27 years of service. However that was not his only job. In the mid 1980’s he became the second United States Cellular agent in Oklahoma. He began working the business out of his home, and would later expand to stores in Vinita, Claremore and Pryor. In 1999 Bob volunteered to serve on the board of the Chelsea Municipal Authority. During his tenure he and the board helped the Town of Chelsea in many ways. In 2008 the CMA Board was recognized as Chelsea Citizens of the year. Bob was also a big supporter for the youth. He and his wife Kathy built the Robert Girten baseball field. He supported the Chelsea FFA and Boys and Girls Club. In his spare time Bob enjoyed working on his land. Spending time in his bulldozer was the relaxing time of his day. Other hobbies included watching OU football and spending time with his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Loyal and Wilma; wife, Kathy, son, Robert; brother, Bill; sister, Judy DeLozier; grandson Brady and Niece, Kim Cole.

Survivors include his daughter Julie Jones and husband Rick; grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel and Tyler Jones, brothers, Tom Girten and wife Wanda of Chelsea, and Jim Girten and wife Lisa of Coalgate; brother-in-law, Jerry Delozier and wife Brenda of Chelsea; sister-in-law, Pam Henry and husband Darrell of Bartlesville, and uncle Darrell Wilson of Sand Springs and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Chelsea at 119 Ash St. Chelsea, Oklahoma, 74016
