Charlene Sue Vannoy (nee McCaskey) was born on December 15, 1947, in Salem, Oregon to parents Charles Edward McCaskey and Elizabeth Nancy Phillips-McCaskey. She preferred the name Sue from an early age and grew up primarily in Verdigris, Oklahoma, graduating from Claremore High School in 1966. She was an avid letter-writer having multiple pen pals across the US, one of whom was a Navy veteran and dashing adventurer Robert R. Vannoy in Brazosport, Texas. This particular pen pal would become the love of her life and they would ultimately marry June 12, 1968 at Verdigris Assembly of God Church. Robert and Sue would go on to build their life and family in Claremore, Oklahoma. They remained married for 57-plus years up to her passing on May 5, 2026.
Sue enjoyed games of all types and spent years at bingo halls making many friends – and occasionally some money. She enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles, playing board games and card games with family, friends, and pals from church. She enjoyed genealogy and was able to connect with cousins across the globe. She loved looking for deals, especially at garage sales, and was also very active in social circles such as Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) and church groups. However, nothing compared to her almost compulsive hobby of collecting anything relating to lighthouses (ooooh-so-many lighthouses!) – spawned from her love of the gospel hymn “Jesus Is the Lighthouse” as well as having a formidable Bible collection.
Sue is survived by her son Eric Vannoy and wife Cynthia (Madison, WI); son Timothy Vannoy and wife Lora (Claremore, OK); grandchildren Frankie Vannoy (OK) and Enara Vannoy (WI).
She is preceded in death by brother Gene, brother Jim, sister Betty, and grand-daughter Elizabeth.
