David Arthur Mathews

Funeral services for Arthur Mathews, age 63, will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, at Pleasant Hope Baptist Church.

Arthur passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025, at the age of 63.

David Athur Mathews was born in Nowata, Oklahoma to Hugh and Francis “Frankie” (Smith) Mathews. He was raised in the Greer Hills, where he spent much of his childhood enjoying the countryside, fishing, and hunting. He attended Chelsea Schools and, after completing his education, began working alongside his uncles in roofing. After holding a few different jobs, Arthur found a long-term career with Rogers County District 1 in 1986. Starting on the road crew under Averd Dye, he worked his way up to serve as office manager for Jerry Payne. In his later years, he transferred to the Rogers County Courthouse maintenance department, where he worked until his retirement in 2010.

Never one to sit idle, Arthur later began Arthur’s Painting and Remodel, which he owned and operated until 2024.

Arthur had many hobbies and interests. He enjoyed searching for arrowheads, hiking and playing guitar with his family. He was also a skilled woodworker, creating pieces that his family will continue to cherish.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hugh Mathews; his brother, Allen Mathews; and his grandson, Warren Mathews.

Arthur is survived by his loving mother, Frankie Mathews; his children, Derrick Hayes and wife Melissa, Allen Mathews and Mindy Buck, and Virginia Taker and husband Smokey; his brother, Eddy Bob Mathews and wife Sandy; sister, Lauralee Ward and husband Rick, grandchildren, Frances, Vincent, Gregory, Weston, Tayley, Conner, Hannah, and Hunter, with another grandchild expected soon. He is also survived by many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Arthur will be remembered for his hard work, kind heart, and the love he shared with his family.
