Memorial service for Don Nickles will be 10:00a.m., Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Church of The Nazarene.
Donald Wayne "Don" Nickles, age 90, of Claremore, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025. Born on October 3, 1935, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he was the son of Thomas Delmer and Fannie Margret (Hedrick) Nickles. Don moved with his family to the Claremore area at a young age, where he would go on to finish his education and graduate with the class of 1954.
Following his graduation, Don began his career at Oklahoma Steel Casting, remaining a loyal employee until 1984. He then transitioned to a new role with the City of Claremore, where he worked at the water plant as a lab technician. Don dedicated himself to this position for 30 years, retiring in 2017.
Quiet and reserved by nature, Don was a steadfast presence who preferred to remain in the background, always ready to lend a helping hand. Whether it was mowing a neighbor's yard or offering assistance in any form, he took pride in being there for others, shunning the spotlight that so often shines on those who serve.
Don had a passion for woodworking, an affinity for working on cars, and a love for reading western books. His greatest joy, however, came from spending time with his family. A devoted family man, he was their biggest fan, supporting every endeavor and attending numerous events held by his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Nickles; daughters Vicky Winn and husband Glenn, and Valery Book and husband Sam; and cherished grandchildren Chris Bruffett, Katie Smith and husband Brian, Jessica Cobb and husband Tyler, Jonathan Book, Bethany Book, Brittany Book, Carina Conner, and Travis Winn. Don also leaves behind his great-grandchildren, McKendrie Smith, Camila Smith, Desmond Smith, Titus Conner, Paige Conner, Brianna Conner, and Zachary Conner, as well as his brother Verol Nickles and wife Phyllis. Don was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings: Orin Nickles, Ivan Nickles, Wilma LeMaster, Harold Nickles, Dale Nickles, and Thomas Nickles. His legacy of kindness, support, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
