Funeral service for Jimmy Sherl will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 8, 2024 at Cedar Point Church in Claremore.
Jimmy Edward Sherl passed away on August 1, 2024, surrounded by his family, at the age of 51. He was born to Jackie and Carol Ann (Admire) Sherl on October 17th, 1972. He grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he would later attend Webster High School. There he played a little basketball and football but truly excelled on the baseball diamond. He graduated with the class of 1991. His talent on the baseball field earned him a scholarship to Carl Albert College, where he continued to pursue his passion for the sport.
On March 14, 1998, Jimmy married his longtime girlfriend and high school sweetheart, April Bankston. The newly wed couple made their home in Tulsa. During the next few years Jimmy embarked on a diverse working career, including positions at American Airlines and owning and operating a lawn care business. However, Jimmy's life took a significant turn in the early 2000s when he was invited to assist as a lay coach for baseball at Webster High School. This experience ignited his true calling, prompting him to return to college and earn his teaching and coaching degree.
Jimmy's first teaching and coaching position was at Claremore High School in 2004. Over the next 18 years, he dedicated himself to coaching football, baseball, and softball, profoundly impacting many young athlete's lives. In 2022, Jimmy accepted the head baseball coaching position at Ft. Gibson, a role he was not looking for, but just couldn't turn down. He would retire from there to focus on his health after his first year.
Outside of coaching, Jimmy loved spending time outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing. However, his greatest joy came from watching his sons play sports and sharing those moments with them.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents, Jackie and Carol Ann Sherl.
He is survived by his loving wife, April, and their three sons, Brooks, Gannon, and Nolan Sherl. He also leaves behind his sister, Jennifer Kelly and husband Shawn; nieces, Courtney and Brianna Kelly; and many cousins, extended family, and countless friends from the baseball and softball communities.
Jimmy's passion for sports and coaching, along with his love for his family, will be remembered by all who knew him.
