Celebration of life services will be held at 11:00a.m., on Monday, May 5, 2025, at First Baptist Church Inola. John passed away peacefully the morning of Thursday, April 24th, 2025, at the age of 76.
Born in McAlester, Oklahoma on April 19, 1949, to Bobby John & Myrl Francis (White) Slayton. He was raised in Wichita, Kansas where he graduated from South High School in 1967. After graduation he attended Pratt Junior College after receiving a scholarship to play football. He later attended Friends University in Wichita also playing football.
He married Stephanie Jo Fox of Derby, KS in 1968 and quickly started their family, Heather Ann, Hebhra Sue & the late Heath John Slayton. In 1972 he moved his family to Catoosa Oklahoma where he went to work as a facilities maintenance for companies like Crosby-McKissick, Sperry Vickers, Bama Pie, Nordam and Sinclair Oil Refinery in Pryor. In 1992 while working at Nordam, John met Jana Childers. After getting married, they had 6 children, Megan, Mason, Jake, Mack, Ike & Hank.
John loved sports. In high school he played football, and threw the shot put & discus. As a young adult he added fast pitch and slow pitch softball & basketball. His favorite sport overall was Powerlifting. He loved lifting weights. It was a hobbie. In 1993 at the age of 44, he won the Oklahoma State Powerlifting Championships in the 275 lb weight class, setting a squat record of 630lbs.
His pride could not be contained when it came to his children, grandchildren & great grandchildren.
John is preceded in death by his parents Bobby John & Myrl Francis (White) Slayton, his son Heath John Slayton & brother Glen Cameron Slayton. He is survived by his children, Heather Williams (Scott) of Inola, Hebhra Slayton of Coweta, Megan Abrams (Jon) of Arcadia, OK, Mason Walker (Ryan) of OKC, Jake Slayton (Kathryn) Clovis, NM, Mack Slayton of Tulsa, Ike Slayton (Avery) of Tulsa and Hank Slayton of Tulsa. Grandchildren- Jonathon Slayton, Aubrey Applegate, Gage Williams, Caden, Bennie & Ace Abrams, Forrest Walker, Sadie & Lucy Slayton. Great Grandchildren- Kyler Slayton, Landree & Tripp Applegate.
The family would like to extend a special "Thank You" to Lane Nursing Home in Inola for all the love & care you gave him. Compassus Hospice, you were truly a blessing in our time of need.
