Mary Joyce Bates passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at the age of 80.
Mary was born in Chelsea, Oklahoma to Loyd and Ruby (Womack) Bible. She attended Waller School in her early years before moving on to Chelsea Schools. There she enjoyed playing basketball and making lifelong friends like Danny Bradshaw. She graduated with the Class of 1962.
Shortly after high school, Mary agreed to go on a blind date set up by some friends—a date that would change her life. That’s when she met Paul Bates. The two hit it off and were married on July 26, 1963, in Nowata. They made their home in Chelsea, with a brief chapter spent living in Moline, Illinois.
Throughout her life, Mary was proud to be called a homemaker. Caring for her family was more than a job—it was her joy. Though she worked a short time at the local luggage factory and occasionally helped wrap Christmas gifts at Dreager’s Department Store, her true calling was taking care of her family.
Mary loved camping and fishing, and one of her favorite places on earth was Creede, Colorado. She loved telling stories about her trips there—some going as far back as her childhood, traveling with her grandparents. In quieter moments, she enjoyed sewing, gardening, and cheering on her nieces and newphews on Chelsea sports teams.
But more than anything else, Mary loved being with her family. Whether it was a big gathering or just a simple visit, she found joy in the people she loved most.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Loyd and Ruby Bible; her husband, Paul Bates; her brothers, Leon and Ken Bible; and her daughter-in-law, Tina Bates.
She is survived by her children, Darrin Bates and wife Kassie, and Paula Brennen and husband Trent; her grandchildren, Kyle Miller and wife Alexa, Alisha McDowell and husband Shaun, Ashley Quinn, and Colton Meloy; and her great-grandchildren, Brantley Alden Miller and Isabella Quinn. She is also survived by her brothers James Bible and wife Sue, Denver Bible, and Tom Bible and wife Jennie; sisters-in-law, Sandi Bible and Dorthy White along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary will be remembered for her steady presence, her gentle spirit, and the deep love she had for her family and community.
