Claremore

Mary Frances Barnett Howard, age 86, passed peacefully into the arms of her Savior on October 8, 2025, at her home in Claremore, Oklahoma.

Born on July 9, 1939, in Vinita, Oklahoma, Mary was the beloved daughter of Gilmore William and Alice Charlotte Bates Barnett. She graduated from Pryor High School and earned her teaching degree from Northeastern State University. Mary began her career at Pryor High School, but her adventurous and spunky spirit led her to teach for the Department of Defense for 12 years, serving military families in Okinawa and Germany. Her warmth, dedication, and lively personality inspired countless students across the globe.

Mary was a longtime member of the Pryor Methodist Church and a current member of Vessel Church, where she found joy, fellowship, and purpose. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Her gentle nature, quick wit, and zest for life made her a cherished presence in every room she entered.

She loved to crochet, travel, read, and spend time with her grandchildren. Mary was known for her warm hugs, her love of storytelling, and her ability to make everyone feel at home. She had a spunky charm that made conversations with her unforgettable—whether she was offering encouragement, sharing a laugh, or simply connecting with others.

Mary is survived by her son David Evans and his wife Gail; her daughter Stephanie Applegate and her husband Chris; grandchildren Farron Evans and wife Megan, Sabra Robertson and husband Ian, Ashley Applegate and fiancé Kaleb Estes, Karlye Wagner, Bethany Applegate, and Carter Wagner; and great-grandsons Anderson and Miller Evans. She is also survived by her sister Madge Hauenstein and numerous nieces, nephews, and other beloved family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her cherished husband, Ronald Howard.

Mary’s life was a testament to grace, kindness, strength, and a spirited joy that touched all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
