Mary Jo Johnson was born on April 26, 1934, in Coweta, Oklahoma, to June and Goldie Johnson. She began her education at Coweta Public Schools before continuing her studies at the Oklahoma School for the Deaf in Sulphur, Oklahoma. It was there that she met the love of her life, Herschel. The two later married and shared many wonderful years together.
Throughout their life together, Mary and Herschel lived in several places including Coweta and Frederick, eventually settling in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mary worked as a bonder at Nordam for over 25 years, where she was known for her dedication, skill, and strong work ethic.
Mary had many passions and hobbies. She loved scrapbooking and quilting, and her cooking was treasured by all who knew her—especially her famous strawberry pretzel salad. In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling, with some of her favorite destinations including the Holy Land, Branson, Hawaii, and Las Vegas. After retirement, Mary enjoyed and participated in water aerobics for the past 20+ years.
Mary never met a stranger. Her warm heart, generous spirit, and infectious smile left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. She was deeply loved by her family and community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, June and Goldie Johnson; her husband, Herschel and her son-in-law, Gary Craig.
Survivors include her daughter, Gloria Craig; her brother, Willis Johnson and wife, Evelyn; her sister, June Hawkins and husband, John; and her grandson, Christopher Craig.
Mary Jo Johnson passed away on July 5, 2025, at the age of 91. Her legacy of love, kindness, and strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
