Roy Hammond Snyder III – known to everyone as “Bill” – of Tulsa, OK, passed away peacefully on July 3, surrounded by his family.
Bill was born on June 28, 1940, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania to the late Bill Jr. and Millicent Snyder. He graduated from Lower Merion High School in 1959 and joined the Air Force, where he served for five years.
Bill spent 39 years working at American Airlines in Chicago, Dallas, and Tulsa, where he made friendships that lasted his lifetime. He retired as a quality insurance inspector in 2003.
In 1977, Bill transferred from Dallas to Tulsa and bought a house in Claremore. His neighbor set him up on a date with her niece Phyllis Nuckolls and they were engaged within a month. They married in 1978 and held their reception at the Will Rogers Hotel in Claremore.
Bill and Phyllis celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on June 24, a few days before his 86th birthday. During their life together they travelled many miles. Bill loved to travel and take road trips and continued this passion when he started a family. With their children they drove to 49 states and all the provinces of Canada. The family had to fly to Hawaii, but if it had been possible Bill would have driven.
After retirement, Bill and Phyllis continued to explore the roads of the US and Canada. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the highway system and could plot routes all over the country without referencing an atlas. In 2023, the couple left Claremore and moved to Tulsa where they could be closer to their children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his children Bill IV and Susan Salamat; four grandchildren; and sister Lissa Goodby. He was preceded in death by his brother John and sister Anne.
A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 10 in the Grand Riviera Lounge at Montereau, 6800 S. Granite Ave, Tulsa, OK 74136.
Two organizations close to Bill’s family that benefit children are the Keaton’s Kindness Foundation and the Tristesse Grief Center. Please consider making a donation in lieu of flowers.
