Watie Corbett Walkingstick

Watie Corbett Walkingstick, 88, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2026.

Watie was born on September 7, 1938, in Stilwell, Oklahoma, to Thomas and Cora (Cochran) Walkingstick. He attended Stilwell schools, with the exception of time spent taking trade classes at Haskell Indian School. He returned to Stilwell and graduated from Stilwell High School.

Following graduation, Watie enlisted in the United States Army, where he proudly served his country until he was honorably discharged. He returned home to care for and operate the family farm following the death of his father.

It was during this time that Watie met Mary Welch. The two began dating and were married on December 22, 1961. They moved to Wichita, Kansas, for a couple of years before returning to Oklahoma, where they settled in the Bushyhead community and made their home.

Watie's working career spanned many years and included employment with Boeing Aircraft before beginning a long career with the Frisco Railroad. The Frisco Railroad later became Burlington Northern, where Watie continued working until his retirement in 1992. Throughout these years, he also operated the Bushyhead Grocery Store and Wade's Used Cars.

In his spare time, Watie enjoyed fishing, hunting, and restoring old cars. He also enjoyed the occasional casino trip, watching Oklahoma football, and, most of all, following the activities of his grandchildren. Whether it be baseball, football or lacrosse, Watie was the grandboys greatest supporter. Throughout Watie’s life, his greatest title was Papa.

Watie will be remembered as an encouraging man who taught his children the value of working hard, helping others, and lifting people up—including themselves. His wisdom, work ethic, generosity, and love for his family will remain a lasting part of the lives of all who knew him.

Watie is survived by his children, Keeven Walkingstick and wife Rita, Ladena Coppinger, and Eric Walkingstick and wife Amy; grandchildren, Mason Walkingstick, Dawson Coppinger, Hunter Walkingstick, and Cade Walkingstick; siblings, David Walkingstick and Joyce Brashear; as well as many extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Cora Walkingstick; his wife, Mary Walkingstick; and siblings, Calvin, Vernon, Wendell, and Tommy Walkingstick, Faye Thompson, Kay Unger, Ruth Potter, Son in Law, Don Coppinger, and Mary Adair.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Chelsea Cemetery.

Watie will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
